Basilica of Our Lady of Angels in Costa Rica

The Basilica was built in the city of Cartago and is dedicated to Our Lady of Angels. Before it was built, there was a local legend. It was said that a little girl found a little statue of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus. The little statue was standing on a rock and she decided to take it home with her. The next morning, the statue was not in her home but back on top of the rock. She was frightened so she took it to the local priest and he locked it up in his church. However, the next day, the rock was no longer locked up, but back on the rock. During that time, local constructors were trying to build the Basilica but only found places near volcanoes, which made construction hard. So, they moved construction to the city of Cartago and built it around the little statue and rock. It was completed in the year of 1639 and every year during the month of August, many Costa Ricans do a pilgrimage and visit the rock that the statue was on.
